Te Puumanawa o Whitiora - The Pulsating Heartbeat of Whitiora

Te Pūmanawa o Whitiora was established in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, as a proactive response to the growing social, emotional, and wellbeing challenges faced by our tamariki, whānau, and staff. Recognising the need for dedicated support within our school and wider community, this kaupapa-driven initiative reflects our unwavering commitment to upholding the values of whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, and kaitiakitanga.

At the heart of this mahi is our dedicated wellbeing team, which includes our PouTuakiri (Guidance Counsellor) and Pou Whānau (Social Worker). Together, they work tirelessly to ensure the best possible outcomes for every tamaiti and their whānau, providing culturally responsive, wraparound support that strengthens wellbeing, fosters resilience, and nurtures positive engagement with learning and school life.

Operating through a strengths-based lens, our team works to identify and reduce the barriers that may prevent some of our tamariki from thriving. Whether it’s one-on-one counselling, whānau advocacy, connecting with external agencies, or supporting staff with strategies to respond to trauma and behaviour – this team stands alongside our community with compassion, purpose, and aroha.

The team consists of:

  • Arlena Stevens – PouTuakiri (Guidance Counsellor): Providing professional therapeutic support and guidance for tamariki and whānau, with a focus on mental health, emotional wellbeing, and goal setting.

  • Paora Hona – Pou Whānau (Social Worker): Working closely with whānau to navigate complex situations, enhance home-school partnerships, and ensure tamariki are safe, supported, and ready to learn.

This mahi is a reflection of who we are as a kura – a place that sees the whole child, values every whānau, and strives to uplift our community, one relationship at a time.
